Chapter Thirteen

My face was drenched in tears when I opened my eyes.

Consuela was standing over me looking concerned. “Miss Jensen, your lunch is ready.” She then asked Gus to unlock my cuff and transfer me to the table.

She showed him the table and where he was supposed to lock the cuff.

“Would it be okay for me to eat in the kitchen?” I didn’t feel like eating alone and thought being near Consuela while she cooked might bring me some comfort.

Gus looked at Consuela for approval. She nodded and motioned for him to follow her. He sat me on a stool at a small island counter and locked me to a bar that was running along the end. He then stood by the screened door.

Consuela served me empanadas with an ají sauce and a lime wedge. The sauce was new to my taste buds. It was spicy, with a vinegar base.

“Consuela, did you make this sauce?” She was mixing some cake batter into a bowl and nodded her head. “Are you making a cake?”

“Sí. Mr. Gavin requested a cake to celebrate.”

This terrified me. He truly felt he was ready to embark on this foolish journey and there was no way to talk him out of it. My heart sank, for a moment, when a rush of déjà vu came over me. My thoughts flashed to Felix and how he had tried to rescue Coco. I felt relieved that I knew Cam was safe and wouldn’t try anything that ill-conceived.

I watched Consuela putter around in the kitchen. I noticed what items she stored in the pantry and took a mental inventory of possible things that could prove useful to help my escape. The biggest obstacle I had was getting the damned handcuff off. Once free of it, I could put the rest of my impossible plan into play. That’s when I noticed Consuela drop something into a drink she was offering to Gus.

“That looks refreshing. May I have a glass?” I truly needed something to off-set the ají sauce before I started breathing fire like a dragon. I was also secretly testing Consuela to see if she would offer me the same drink.

Consuela gave me a sideways glance and hesitated for a brief moment. “So sorry, Miss Jensen, but the tea is gone. I will get you a bottle of water.”

She reached into the refrigerator and handed me the water. I was intrigued and realized I could and should trust her, as she seemed to be actively trying to help me escape. I chugged the water. My mouth finally felt some relief from the inferno it had become. I placed my utensils on my plate after I finished the rest of my meal.

“I would help you with the dishes if I could move.” I pulled my shackled hand away as far as I could.

Consuela smiled and winked like she had a secret as she picked my plate up and moved it to the sink.

I didn’t have a chance to question her. Gus unlocked my cuff and started leading me back to Gavin’s office.
